Familiarize Yourself With Tajweed Terms

Tajweed terminology can be a little confusing at first, but once you try to know what each word means it’s much easier to start with the actual rules. Here’s a list of some common Tajweed terms you can start with:

Ahkam: That’s what we call Tajweed rules.

Makharij (exits): They are the emission points from which each of the 28 Arabic letters is pronounced. The mouth, tongue, throat, lips, and nose are the five primary exits.

Izhaar: To make the sound more apparent.

Idghaam: To merge two letter sounds.

Iqlaab: To swap/turn around two sounds.

Ikhfaa: To hide a specific sound.

Harakah: the movement of the letter and how it’s pronounced.

Qalqalah: Sound articulation and echoes, also referred to as bouncing

Nabr: the application of pressure to a part of a phrase’s first letter

Ghunnah: Nasalization

Qiraat (readings): The ten genuine Quranic readings collected by al-Shatibi and al-Jazari.

Tilawah: Right Quran recitation
